When you think about the best history podcast of all time, what do you first think of? If you are a history geek like me, you would have lots in mind. If you are a casual podcast listener or first-timer, you might have already heard of the Slow Burn Podcast. As undoubtedly one of the most popular podcasts, they have recently won Apple’s Podcast Show of the Year. They have won specifically for their latest season Roe v. Wade.
Overview Of Slow Burn Podcast
Slow Burn has been fearless in discussing hard-hitting scandals of politics and situations in recent times of American history. In fact, Slow Burn started with a bang when they talked about the infamous Watergate Scandal. This season lasted for six episodes. The episodes were informative and well-detailed, focusing on stories we mostly overlooked or forgot about. This in-depth recollection of what happened within the two years enthralled everyone to hear these side stories. Due to the popularity of the Watergate season, a docu-series was made.
They also covered Bill Clinton’s Impeachment in the second season with eight episodes.
Host Leon Neyfakh narrated these two spectacular seasons, where they talked about the untold and forgotten stories of the people involved in these White House scandals. In the third season, they changed their direction from the White House and talked about The Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac with nine episodes. Then, they featured David Duke in their fourth season. The fifth and sixth seasons talked about the Iraq war and the L.A. riots in that order, respectively, with eight episodes each. Then, the last season garnered a cry due to the latest events.
The seventh season featured the controversial Roe v. Wade, which earned them the Apple Podcasts Show of the Year Award. The podcast’s topic has been well-timed, talking about the human rights issue of abortion and how important the previous ruling was. After the release of the last episode of the season, the Supreme Court officially overturned Roe v. Wade.
What Do I Like About The Slow Burn Podcast?
The people of Slow Burn are fearless in talking about controversial takes and perspectives that people may be too afraid to explore. The podcast lets us relieve the subjects of these stories so that the storytelling is as detailed as possible. At the same time, I love that the podcast is separated into seasons where they talk about a specific event per season. This makes the podcast easier to navigate, and so I can go back and forth with episodes and subjects I am interested in.
They surely made the topics as timely and relatable to the current situation as possible. This is especially true with their famous Watergate and Roe v. Wade seasons. The deep-dive research into how the Watergate scandal was unveiled bit by bit was fascinating, starting from the overlooked Martha Mitchell’s story. On the other hand, Roe v. Wade’s timely discussion showed both sides of abortion. In this way, the podcast lets the listener understand both arguments more deeply. 
They give opportunities for access to well-researched information to help the listeners further understand the situation. These infamous issues and events in America’s history have gravely impacted the nation. They stay within the truth and give unbiased opinions regardless of your political side. Slow Burn gives a lot of insights into America’s history and the current situation.
What Do I Not?
As much as a podcast tries to prevent having sides and remaining unbiased, Politics will always be controversial. People have opposing beliefs, and some may find the podcast biased and take a side. Slow Burn may not be for everyone in that case. Although, I believe that when tackling issues in the country, it is always best to keep an open mind, especially when you are about to take new detailed information with legitimate resources. In my humble opinion, Slow Burn was able to show these sides of the stories they feature.
Overall Thoughts
I am certainly in love with the podcast and would love to hear more from them. The way they tackle each issue is straightforward and unbiased. They do not shy away from the truth and give voice to stories that people may have missed or no longer recall. If you are looking for a critically-acclaimed history podcast that is informative, unbiased, and entertaining, Slow Burn is that podcast you are looking for. I am certain of it.
