About Microsoft Surface Pro 7

Microsoft’s latest edition of the Surface Pro series, the Surface Pro 7, is a dependable and durable tablet that lives up to its predecessors. Unveiled alongside the Surface Laptop 3 and Surface Pro X at an event on October 2019, the Surface Pro 7 has been designed as a hybrid computer that functions as a laptop and a tablet, with its kickstand allowing for a steady tabletop mode.

The Surface Pro 7 is comparable to the Surface Pro 6 but has the added benefit of USB-C. Additionally, it offers upgraded performance and microphones, though with a shorter battery life. This hybrid device is an ideal choice for those anticipating the new port.

Design & Build

The Surface Pro 7 looks almost identical to the previous versions, with the only difference being the inclusion of a USB-C port. The device measures 11.5 x 7.9 x 0.33 inches (292 x 201 x 8.5mm) and weighs 1.7 pounds (770g), and is available in matte black and silver aluminum finishes.

The 12.3-inch display remains as vibrant and sharp as its predecessor’s, but unfortunately, it still has the same thick bezels. The top bezel houses the 5 MP front-facing camera, suitable for making video calls, and supports Windows Hello for easy access to Windows through facial recognition. Additionally, the Surface Pro 7 has an 8 MP back camera.

The laptop is designed with productivity in mind, offering features such as a rear-facing camera for taking normal and panoramic pictures, as well as document scanning and whiteboarding.

To top of, Surface Pro 7 features a kickstand that makes it easier to use on the go, providing almost 180 degrees of stability and a range of angle options. However, it is not as convenient as opening the lid of a laptop, as the kickstand needs to be extended manually. Additionally, the tablet may move around on your lap due to the kickstand.

The new Surface Pro 7 Type Cover keyboard has a more pronounced key travel, and a springier feel when our fingers lift from the keys. It features a smooth, responsive touchpad and comes with a luxurious Alcantara fabric material that is more tightly woven than before. Moreover, the Type Cover’s glass touchpad provides a superior typing experience than the iPad Pro and safeguards the device’s display. It also provides three brightness levels of backlighting or no lighting at all.

Display

Display Microsoft Pro 7The 12.3-inch display of the Surface Pro 7 offers a sharp resolution of 2736 x 1824 pixels, with 267 PPI. It is touch sensitive and works well with the Microsoft Surface Pen for editing clips and taking notes. However, we would have liked to see a wider range of colors, as this panel only supports the standard sRGB color range, unlike the latest Apple MacBook Pro laptops that support the P3 color gamut.

The display of the Surface Pro 7 emits 396 nits of brightness, which is similar to that of the preceding Surface tablets and is relatively comparable to other notebooks and tablets. Unfortunately, this may not be enough for outdoor use due to its glossy and reflective nature. However, the Surface Pro 7 is a pleasant device for working in a dimly lit office.

Performance

performance-video-microsoft-surface-pro7This Microsoft 2-in-1 laptop features Intel’s 10th generation Core series processors, such as the Core i3, Core i5, and Core i7. On top of that, it has 8GB of RAM, and 256GB SSD storage, making it perfect for podcasting. However, the RAM card is soldered to the motherboard, meaning it cannot be removed or upgraded.

The Surface Pro 7 is equipped with Dolby Audio technology, as found within the Realtek Audio Console app, with sound enhancement by default. This provides a balanced sound for listening to audio from the tablet’s speakers, which is not a standard feature on many laptops today.

This laptop is powered by a 42.3 Whr Lithium-ion battery and is advertised to offer up to 10.5 hours of battery life. However, the Core i5 and i7 versions of Intel’s CPUs have enhanced graphical capabilities, which may reduce the battery life.
