Core Of The Offline Gamer Podcast

The Offline Gamer podcast is a monthly show hosted by Matt, Rai, and Karen. They are passionate about gaming and share their experiences with tabletop and PC games. They cover various topics including exciting Kickstarter projects, events across the UK like Airecon and the UK Games Expo, and interviews with interesting figures in the UK board game industry.

As announced during their 83rd episode, their dear co-host Rai is stepping back a bit from hosting duties. But they’ll still be part of some episodes moving forward — just not as frequently.

In their episodes, they talk about their adventures during UK gaming events.s. These events provide them with opportunities to try out new games, meet fellow gamers, and immerse themselves in the gaming community.

They also discuss specific games in depth. For example, they have dedicated episodes on Shiver RPG where they participate in a live play-through, and discuss their overall impressions. Similarly, they explore popular titles from publishers around the world.

In addition to discussing their own experiences, they also engage in conversations with interesting figures in the UK board game industry. This includes designers, artists, and publishers who give insights and perspectives into their work. Alongside their regular shows, The Offline Gamer also has a YouTube channel where they do unboxing videos, game reviews, and convention coverage for visual content associated with gaming.

In short, The Offline Gamer podcast is a casual yet informative source for all things related to gaming – from exploring new releases to covering major gaming conventions.

Who Are The Hosts?

Matt, Rai, and Karen are all avid tabletop gamers who enjoy playing a variety of games. They started getting into the hobby at different times and have different interests within the gaming world.

Matt is an IT professional. He has been playing tabletop games for a while now and is particularly drawn to Kickstarter projects. He has a collection of food-based games and away from gaming enjoys F1 racing and photography in his spare time.

Rai joined the hobby around the same time as Matt and quickly became hooked. They started exploring the hobby beyond classic games like Cluedo and Labyrinth after being introduced by Matt. Rai enjoys PC gaming, spending time in nature, watching films or TV shows, taking photos, and occasionally speaking Spanish.

Both Matt and Rai got into gaming in 2015 and started attending the UK Games Expo. They decided to document their gaming journey through a podcast.

Karen got into tabletop gaming in 2019 because of her relationship with Matt. She has been enjoying discovering different types of board games that she didn’t know existed before. Karen recently joined the podcast as a full-time host.

Why You Should Listen To This Podcast

If you’re a fan of gaming, whether video games or board games, The Offline Gamer podcast is a must-listen.

One of the best things about this podcast is its ability to make listeners feel almost as if they’ve attended prestigious events like the UK Gamers Expo and Airecon. For those unable to physically go, it’s an invaluable way to stay connected with these significant happenings in the gaming community. You get snippets, coverage, and insights straight from these events – all while sitting comfortably at home.

But let me tell you something else. The depth and breadth of knowledge that this podcast brings about the world of gaming are truly commendable. I’ve found myself discovering a whole slew of new games I might never have come across otherwise. This show has been like my personal guide into unfamiliar territories within the gaming realm.

Even though I don’t have much time to play video or board games these days, listening to The Offline Gamer podcast brings back all those memories of growing up playing them. The hosts’ passion and enthusiasm draw me in every time and make me feel connected to this world that I used to be so immersed in. It’s like listening to friends talk about games, and it creates a sense of familiarity and relatability.

But let’s not overlook one particular element that adds a unique charm to the podcast – their intro and outro music. It’s a delightful throwback to the sounds of the good old Gameboy days that 90s kids would find incredibly nostalgic. This little touch not only sets the mood but also invites listeners into an exciting journey, making it all the more engaging.

Aspects Of The Podcast That Don’t Suit My Preferences

I enjoy the podcast for the most part but there are a few bits and bobs that make me go “hmm”. First off, it’s raw – which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. But sometimes this means the discussions can have gaps. You know when you’re having a convo with your mates and suddenly everyone goes silent? Yeah, those moments of awkward silence where you’re all scrambling to find something interesting to say next. Well, that happens occasionally on this podcast too.

Other than these occasional hiccups though, The Offline Gamer is pretty solid!
